If you are going to Milan, definitely add Lago di Como (Lake Como) to your itinerary. I would have never thought of going to Lago di Como if it were not for the wedding we were attending. All-in-all, this destination far exceeded our expectations.
Lake Como is famous for its beautiful landscapes and hillside villages. The Lake has a depth of ~ 410 meters (1,345 feet), the deepest in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe. Since Roman times, Lake Como has been a popular retreat for European aristocrats and has become a popular tourist attraction. Accordingly, this Lake has been named one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
Getting There
Lake Como is a little under one hour by train from Milan. Depending on where you are staying, you will need to take a ferry, bus, or taxi to your final destination. You can catch a train from Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna. The best thing is to look up the best route to your final destination on google maps. Driving is also an option.
Where To Stay Around Lake Como
There are many places to stay around the Lake: Como (the city), Cernobbio (closest to Switzerland), Moltrasio, Bellagio, Tremezzo, and so many more communes. We stayed in an Airbnb in Cernobbio for the wedding we were attending.
PRO TIP: The best way to get around from place to place is by ferry; therefore, stay closer to the water or within a very short walking distance to the ferry. Hillsides may posess spectacular lake views, but it will be a hike to get anywhere.
How Long To Stay: You could easily stay a week in Lake Como, however 3 full days is sufficient and if you are short on time, a day trip would work also.
