It’s a real thing – Florence Syndrome is a condition characterized by anxiety and depression that can be triggered by visiting the city. Symptoms can include feeling overwhelmed or profound emotion (sometimes swooning) when exposed to the extraordinary beauty of the art. Florence is a giant museum and can be overwhelming. There are so many beautiful works of art everywhere you turn. At times, I felt confused and did not know where to turn or what to see. How To Avoid Florence Syndrome

️⃣ Have a plan! It is essential to do your research before arriving so you know what you want to see while in Florence; otherwise, your trip can feel overwhelming. One way to ensure you see the sights you want is to get a tour guide. They can help you navigate the city and ensure you don’t miss anything important. Another option is to create your own itinerary. This can be helpful if you’re the type of person who likes to plan ahead. No matter what you decide, just remember that it’s important to have a plan.

️⃣ Do not try to see everything, because you can’t in one visit. When faced with the barrage of beauty in Florence, some people may feel like they’re not doing justice to the city by rushing through it. However, trying to see everything in one visit is unrealistic and can also take away from the overall experience. Florence is a city that is meant to be savored, not just seen. So slow down, take your time, and savor the experience. Your visit will be a richer experience.

️⃣ Go out early in the morning when the streets are relatively empty to avoid the crowds. Then, take a siesta in the afternoon to escape the heat (and crowds) and venture out again in the evening just before sunset; the city takes on a whole new vibe after dark. By planning your day around the crowds, you can still experience Florence’s sights and sounds without feeling overwhelmed.

️⃣ Florence is a beautiful city, full of art and culture; after several hours of exploring, the hunger will set in. Definitely make sure you stock up on snacks! Most restaurants close at 2 pm and don’t open again until 7:30 pm, and Florence Syndrome is real. So save yourself the trouble and pack a few snacks for the afternoon. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

️⃣ Make a plan for where you will eat dinner, and make reservations at least a day in advance. Restaurants fill up quickly. The last thing you need is to be hungry and not know where to eat, or worse, not be able to find a restaurant to eat. Having a dinner plan will help you keep Florence Syndrome at bay.

️⃣ Lastly, stay hydrated! The heat can exacerbate Florence Syndrome, so staying hydrated will go a long way if helping you feel less overwhelmed.
