Embarking on a 7-day Alaska cruise is an extraordinary journey that promises to immerse you in the heart of Alaska’s majestic natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. From the awe-inspiring glaciers and rugged mountains to the charming coastal towns and abundant wildlife, every moment of this cruise is filled with unforgettable experiences. Before we jump into the itinerary, this blog gives you a taste of what to expect aboard a cruise to Alaska.
Our chosen itinerary was the 7-day Voyage of the Glacier with Glacier Bay booked via Princess Cruise Lines. The Cruise started from Vancouver, BC and ended in Whittier, Alaska (one-way). As for our choice of accommodation, we opted for an inside cabin. While it may lack the scenic views of an ocean-view or balcony cabin, we found it to be a practical and comfortable choice for our needs. After all, with so many fascinating destinations and experiences to explore, we spent most of our time outside the cabin.
Majestic Princess Northbound Itinerary Overview:
- Day 0 – Arrive in Vancouver and Sail Away
- Day 1 – At Sea
- Day 2 – Ketchikan
- Day 3 – Juneau
- Day 4 – Skagway
- Day 5 – Glacier Bay (Scenic Cruising)
- Day 6 – College Fjord (Scenic Cruising)
- Day 7 – Arrive in Whittier, take a bus transfer to Anchorage Airport, and Fly Home
We highly recommend this itinerary to maximize your trip and see more of Alaska, including Glacier Bay National Park.
Best Time to Cruise
Alaska’s cruise season spans from May to September, which is also the best time to visit Alaska to witness the state’s pristine landscapes and abundant wildlife. The weather is relatively mild during this period, allowing you to enjoy outdoor activities comfortably. In summer, temperatures in Alaska range from lows of 38°F to highs of 65°F, with an average of 16 rainy days. The extended daylight hours characteristic of the Alaskan summer enhance your overall cruise experience.
Getting to The Port (Departure)
Depending on the cruise line and Itinerary, Alaska Cruises generally depart from Seattle or Vancouver, BC. We took the one-way northbound cruise from Vancouver, BC ending in Whittier, Alaska. Our journey started with a scenic train ride from Seattle to Vancouver, BC, via Amtrak to get to our departing port. We caught the Skylink to the Pier from the Pacific Central Central Train Station in Vancouver, BC.
Cruise Onboarding Experience
The onboarding process, while time-consuming, is essential for a smooth cruise experience. For a hassle-free onboarding process, we dropped off our larger bags and carry-ons to the porters, who delivered them directly to our stateroom. All we carried with us were personal hand luggage (purse, laptop bag, etc.). We then collected our access cruise medallions and completed security checks and immigration procedures. Note that you will need passports for this itinerary. Patience, snacks, and water are your ally during this process, as it can take up to 4 hours (our process took approximately 2.5 hours).
Quick Tips for an Alaska Cruise
- Clothing and Layers: The weather in many destinations can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to layer up and down. Pack enough warm clothes, including snow attire, if you plan on going on a snow or glacier excursion. Having the proper clothing will ensure you stay comfortable throughout your journey.
- Protect Your Eyes: With brightness reflected from the clouds and snow, don’t forget to pack a good pair of sunglasses. They will provide protection for your eyes and enhance your overall experience by allowing you to better enjoy the stunning landscapes and vibrant surroundings.
- Personal Entertainment: Long cruises can sometimes become tedious, so it’s a good idea to bring along some light entertainment – it may come in handy. Whether it’s a book, a portable game, or your favorite music playlist, having something to keep you entertained will make the time pass quicker and ensure an enjoyable travel experience.
- Medication Management: Bring over-the-counter for common symptoms and applicable prescription medications; bringing enough for your trip is essential. Obtaining medications on board or at ports can be pretty expensive, not to mention potentially inconvenient. You can avoid unnecessary stress and expense by planning ahead and packing an adequate supply.
- Support Local Communities: When booking tours and purchasing souvenirs, consider supporting local providers and shops. Booking tours directly with local operators guarantee a more authentic experience and ensures maximum benefit stays within the community. Similarly, opting to shop from local store owners not only contributes to the local economy but also allows you to discover unique and meaningful souvenirs that reflect the culture and craftsmanship of the destination.
Alaska Cruise Ship Experience
The cruise was kid-friendly and provided ample age-group-appropriate activities; however, in our experience, the cruise ship itself, food, and onboard entertainment were unremarkable compared to other cruise experiences we have had in the past. This opinion is based on personal preferences, fully recognizing that tastes and opinions on the vibe, food, and entertainment can vary. It’s essential to remember that everyone’s cruise experience can differ based on individual preferences and expectations; therefore, it’s always best to approach a cruise with an open mind. Here is a view of what the exprience would look like
When booking your cruise, it is crucial to prioritize your itinerary and carefully consider your choices. Your travel experience can be significantly enhanced by proper planning and thoughtful decision-making. It’s important to factor in the duration of the cruise and the time spent at each port.
Finally, don’t forget to consider practical aspects such as budget, travel restrictions, and any specific requirements or preferences you may have. Consider the overall cost of the cruise, including additional expenses such as gratuities, beverages, and extra activities. By taking the time to carefully plan your cruise itinerary, you’ll ensure that your vacation is filled with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories. Bon voyage!
